Graham & Katie

Thank you so much for coming to our wedding! Our Origin Story:

Graham and Katie met in the summer of 2013 at what would have been Katie’s grad school graduation. Though Katie wasn’t graduating, she attended anyway, wanting to celebrate with her classmates. She noticed Graham across the room and sat behind him intentionally, thinking he was cute. Little did she know he was there to celebrate her friend, Jessie (whose husband is Graham’s cousin, Cameron…look for them in the guest list below!). Things progressed from there when Graham crashed a party at Katie’s house and admired her filbert tree. He tried to impress her with stories about his mother’s horse, Sunny, but mostly impressed her with his gumption to show up and woo her unannounced. But in the weeks after, Graham flaked, ultimately standing her up at a sing along karaoke event he’d invited her to. The next time Graham reached out Katie was unresponsive.

Seven months later (January 2014) on the Chinese New Year, Graham was attending his cousin, Cameron’s, birthday party. Katie arrived later in a giant puffy coat, arms full with a traditional new year’s pork log and colorful paper décor. Jessie immediately approached her with a hug. Katie looked up and saw Graham across the room, which seemed to trigger a sudden release of her arms, sending Jessie’s wine, the paper décor, and pork log across the room. The wine glass broke and when Katie looked up again, Graham was gone, into another room.

A few weeks later, Katie got her own gumption and showed up unannounced to a party Graham had informally invited her to on Facebook. Typically, Katie wouldn’t attend parties she is not personally invited to, but something made her go. The effort seemed to send the right signal to Graham, as he reached out in the days after to invite Katie to the Portland International Film Festival. Unable to decide on one film, they attended three - one a day for three days in a row. By the third film (Ernest & Celestine) they were sold on each other, naïve to the adventures and family to come.
